Last
year, the high school faculty surveyed
students about what they would like to improve
at GHS.
The
top six things they wanted to improve were
behavior in the hallways, restrooms, the
cafeteria, the parking lot, the gym, and the
auditorium.
This
2009-2010 school year, Greenville High School
decided to show their PRIDE along with
thousands of other schools across the United
States. The goal is to improve positive
behavior and decrease disruptive behavior.
PRIDE stands for Personal responsibility,
Respect, Integrity, Determination, and
Excellence.
GHS
counselor Mrs. Folden said, "Pride is
important because it encourages students to
make better choices and improve behavior."
School staff members hand out PRIDE passes to
students who demonstrate characteristics of
PRIDE. Students who are awarded PRIDE
passes turn their passes into the front office
for a chance to win a mystery prize. The
most recent mystery gift was a trip to Aunt
Char's playground during school and the
winners were given pizza for lunch.
When
asked how Dariela Rodriguez got her PRIDE
pass, she answered, "Getting a PRIDE pass was
pretty easy and I didn't expect to get it.
After school, I was helping my friend with her
homework and a teacher acknowledged it and
gave one to me."
GHS
teachers are also teaching lessons on PRIDE
during their homeroom classes each week to get
students further educated and involved in the
PRIDE program.
The
school faculty has already started to notice a
difference in the student body atmosphere as a
result of PRIDE, and it's just the beginning.
The PRIDE program will last all 180 days of
this school year.
